Spiced Hot Chocolate

Written By: admin - Feb• 28•13

What is better than having an unexpected day off due to expected snow? Well, making delicious spiced hot chocolate! I used a bit of spanish chocolate for my creation. Easy, simple, comforting, and beyond delicious! (Whether you add a spash of your favorite liquor, or not, is entirely up to you)

Spiced Hot Cocoa

Yield: 1 generous serving

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Milk
  • 1/4 cup good quality chocolate, chopped (I used a spanish chocolate)
  • 1 Tablespoon Ovaltine powder
  • Few dashes of cinnamon
  • Tiniest sprinkle of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, gently heat the milk and chocolate pieces over medium-low heat. Whisk this mixture until hot but not boiling. Add in the ovaltine and cinnamon, mixing to combine. Pour and enjoy!

Roasted Vegetable Spring Rolls with Almond Maple Sriracha Dipping Sauce

Written By: admin - Feb• 26•13

Sometimes I allow myself to run with a crazy food idea. This does not happen very often. Why? Well, it is just safer that way! But today I ran with this crazy idea of creating a spring roll. I let myself color outside the lines. I let my mind create flavor combinations I thought would be a good match. I tapped into my instincts and ran like mad.

Browned Butter Almond Butter Crispy Treats with Dark Chocolate Espresso Glaze

Written By: admin - Feb• 24•13

A black and white film unfolded before my eyes. The music soundtrack played throughout – dramatic, sweeping string tremolos that would soar high in the stratosphere, followed by loud and low answers from the brass. A full orchestra. At times the music would catch my attention and then suddenly slip away and subtlety accompany the unfolding plot.

Film noir, old Hollywood crime dramas, were made after the World War and before the Cold War began. Watching “In a Lonely Place” on a snowed in Saturday night hooked me into this genre of film. Or is Humphrey Bogart merely easy on the eyes? Please do not get me started on that silky, smooth voice of his. These browned butter crispy treats were supposed to accompany the movie. Confession: I was too caught up watching Mr. Bogart. This crime need not be reported to the authorities.

Baked Chai Spiced Donuts

Written By: admin - Feb• 18•13

I have had donuts on my mind. Or maybe it is just wanting to step back in time to about 30 years ago. The setting: the side kitchen at Howard’s Restaurant in Colebrook, New Hampshire. I was happily perched on a stool at the side counter sipping my orange juice that reportedly had ‘sunshine pills’ in them. I was 6, and I fiercely believed in these sunshine pills. To my right was a large, black tub filled with hot donut oil, aka lard back in those days. The woman flipping the perfectly rounded and browned donuts as they danced around the black pan? My grandmother. She was dressed in her work uniform which always included a colorful red kerchief tied around her hair. As I patiently waited for the sunshine pills to kick in, it was all I could do to stay safely on my stool. My eyes kept wandering from the big black kettle to the sheet pan beside it lined with brown paper and back again. My grandmother, realizing how much patience a 6 year old has, handed me a few piping hot donut holes for me to enjoy with that glass of oj. Such love. My young self thought this was magic. Though these donuts are no longer in my life I created a slightly healthier and spiced up version of a donut. It is baked and not fried in lard. The taste? Satisfying on the days when you want to take a trip down memory lane.

The Everyday: Week 7

The Everyday: Week 7

I had a brilliant idea: leftover buttercream frosting paired with Cointreau was going to create something decadent. I had visions of cocoa dusted truffles, dark chocolate maple glazed truffles with a little sea salt sprinkled on top, cayenne dusted truffles. It was going to be a show stopper of a gift, friends. If only it had worked.

Instead spiced chocolate cherry black bean cookies were made. Recipe coming soon!

Dark skies and sunlit trees. Such conflict and yet so beautiful.

Happy dog.

I made a valentine gift, for my Valentine. It was over-the-top with puns. The puns created a poem. Fact.

We created this meal together. Teamwork.

Halibut & Eggplant Miso Gratin

I remembered to look around this week for it keeps me grounded.

I bought some tulips and saved one for me. Fresh flowers give my soul a boost during the dark days of winter.

Thank you for reading, friends! Have a great weekend! New posts coming soon!!

Red Velvet Madness

Written By: admin - Feb• 10•13

It is cold. It is windy. There is a lot of nasty weather happening outside right now. Three things are necessary in times such as this: a blazing fire in the woodstove, hot toddies galore and cake. This is acceptable in my house. C’mon in…lets figure out where the red velvet cake came from anyhow…and, shall we indulge in that hot toddy? Great idea, high five!
