The Everyday: Week 11

Written By: admin - Mar• 16•13

There are weeks when one line of a song is stuck in my head. One line. All week long. It happens. The lyric of the week, somehow, found itself in nearly every photo this week. Many thanks to Dar Williams for writing Spring Street!

And the new dead leaves
They made the trees look like children with gray hair

But I’ll push myself up through the dirt
And shake my petals free
I’m resolved to being born
And so resigned to bravery

There were days when I was a little later than usual – meaning I overslept..big time! On this day my roommate  Mom packed my lunch. I saw this and felt like I was 10 all over again. Thankful.

My roommate will be making her own lunches here soon. Awesome.

Looking up helped me stay grounded this week.

Roasting.

I will find Spring Street one day.

The last bite of almond butter.

Mixing. (Recipe Soon!)

Typical Morning Commute.

Looking left. Evening Commute.

Early morning light outside my door.

I hope you had a great week as well! Thank you for reading!!

Water Street Cafe

Water Street Cafe, Laconia NH

“I learned how to cook from my Mother, Grandmother, and Grandfather,” said Ted Roy, owner of the Water Street Cafe. He smiled, and with slight glimmer in his eye,  asked, “Does that count?” As a daughter who watched my grandmother make donuts at Howard’s Restaurant in Colebrook, New Hampshire, as well as learning from my mother, I knew exactly what Ted was talking about. Yes, learning how to cook from our family members certainly counts Ted!

The restaurant itself sits on a quiet corner in Laconia, New Hampshire. Inside the bright, airy cafe were several tables and booths. A friendly waitress directed us to sit wherever we would like and we opted for a booth near a window. The menu had an array of delicious sounding items including a variety of omelets, eggs benedict, waffles, pancakes, and breakfast sandwiches. Sweet Z opted for a cafe special- plain buttermilk pancakes, scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast and juice. I chose the blueberry cranberry pancake a favorite among the pancake lovers that dine there. Fresh, hot coffee was poured, we settled in and our breakfast suddenly appeared! Such prompt service!

The pancakes were fluffy, as promised. The bacon was served extra crispy, my favorite. The eggs were a good, basic scrambled egg. To me, the texture was a bit heavy. I wonder if cooking them at a lower temperature for longer would result in a lighter end product? The homemade whole wheat toast did not disappoint. This cafe seemed to me a place that consistently serves good, quality food to every patron.

But Ted, he had other plans. He wanted us to sample a waffle creation of his. Who am I to turn down a waffle? Suddenly this belgian waffle appeared laden with fresh strawberries, bananas, blueberries and a dollop of sour cream and brown sugar.

The texture of the waffle was perfect…a crunchy outside and soft inside. The ultimate bite consisted of a little bit of waffle, a dab of tangy, slightly sweetened sour cream, and as many berries as I could fit on my fork (while still acting like a lady). This creation stole the show for me!

But what did we top our pancakes with? The standard offering is a jug of ‘maple syrup’. Sweet Z took one glance and politely asked for the ‘real maple syrup’ that was offered on the menu.

This ‘syrup’ brought to us caught me by surprise. With so many maple sugar operations in New Hampshire and Vermont I was left wondering why ‘real’ maple syrup was being trucked in from Knott’s Berry Farm in California? (I did taste just the syrup..and it did not taste very maple-like to me. It was a more realistic version of syrup vs. the imitation syrup that was the standard offering).  My question on this was answered soon enough. Unfortunately, we caught them at the wrong time – they were out of their usual pure maple syrup offering from Maple Grove Farms in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

If you are in the area please stop by Water Street Cafe. The inviting waitstaff, fast service, and great food will likely have you returning again and again.

The Water Street Cafe is up for ‘Best Breakfast in NH’. Click here to cast your vote!

All the fixings

The weather took a turn recently. It was a warm and a balmy 45* out. I wanted to celebrate the warmer temperatures. I wanted something that would remind me of a tropical vacation. Mango, coconut, and pineapple fit this bill. Adding in some chocolate sauce spiked with a little Cointreau? Oh, please…lets just throw our up hands up and yell welcome spring from the rooftops. The Everyday: Week 10

The Everyday: Week 10

Mud Season is upon us. Translation: Sap is running, maple syrup production is in full swing, and best of all? The SUN is shining!

Things at work this week were utterly confusing and downright difficult. Seeking the light.

But, there were some celebrations to be had.

Fact: There are TWO packages of cough drops near this clarinet. I shuddered my way through 2 hours of rehearsal.

One day I shall see green grass again. For now, I will seek out sunsets amidst the snow.

A large grey squirrel playing in the sun

Sunday morning muffins…lets celebrate!

The last everyday for this week is a little story. I was at my local grocery Friday night at the perfect time – post dinner rush. I meandered through the store, stopping here and there, gathering a few staples for dinner. The woman manning the cheese counter and I had a short conversation, grateful and relieved that Friday was finally here. We wished each other a nice weekend as I made my way toward the checkout counter.

The automatic doors opened onto the dark evening and I was immediately embraced. By music. A full orchestral piece was playing…and I was looking for the orchestra. I was momentarily confused but then I saw the source. A man was sitting in a car close to the entrance door. He was as calm as could be sitting inside his car listening to the soaring melodies of the violins, followed by loud, triumphant brass answers. This man looked to be so content with life.  I smiled, and with this gorgeous music following me, I made my way across the parking lot. I loaded the groceries in the car then took just a few more moments to simply listen. It pays to shop on a Friday night.

Baked Hot Wings with Yogurt Blue Cheese Sauce

“So go ahead, push your luck
Say what it is you gotta say to me
We will push on into that mystery
And it’ll push right back”
 Dar Williams

I had nearly missed an appointment because I was listening to a guest speaker. It was so popular and well received everyone was invited back the next night to continue on the conversation. I was in my car, traffic was completely backed up and my gas tank light was on, nearly empty. My grandfather was in the passenger seat and was calmly helping me navigate through the busy streets, in this unfamiliar area, towards a gas station he, somehow, knew about. I smiled at my grandfather. He always knew just where to go. I woke up from the dream.  Continue reading “Baked Hot Wings with Yogurt Blue Cheese Sauce” »

“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

IMG_9426My face had not felt the warm rays of sun in days. I felt the weight of the expansive gray skies upon my shoulders as I woke up at dawn one morning. As if on cue, an owl was perched in the tree outside my bedroom window. He was keeping watch.  Every step became heavier and heavier each day, walking through the crunchy snow. Trudging through each day just waiting, wondering and dreaming. After all, the owl was a symbol of Athena thought to be the goddess of wisdom and strategy. Feel the weight? Imagine this weight that can turn.. Continue reading “Circus Cookies” »

What is better than having an unexpected day off due to expected snow? Well, making delicious spiced hot chocolate! I used a bit of spanish chocolate for my creation. Easy, simple, comforting, and beyond delicious! (Whether you add a spash of your favorite liquor, or not, is entirely up to you)

Spiced Hot Cocoa

Yield: 1 generous serving

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Milk
  • 1/4 cup good quality chocolate, chopped (I used a spanish chocolate)
  • 1 Tablespoon Ovaltine powder
  • Few dashes of cinnamon
  • Tiniest sprinkle of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, gently heat the milk and chocolate pieces over medium-low heat. Whisk this mixture until hot but not boiling. Add in the ovaltine and cinnamon, mixing to combine. Pour and enjoy!

Roasted Vegetable Spring Rolls with Almond Maple Sriracha Dipping Sauce

Written By: admin - Feb• 26•13

Sometimes I allow myself to run with a crazy food idea. This does not happen very often. Why? Well, it is just safer that way! But today I ran with this crazy idea of creating a spring roll. I let myself color outside the lines. I let my mind create flavor combinations I thought would be a good match. I tapped into my instincts and ran like mad.
